How it works

The NouvaDerm Thulium Laser is a fourth-generation fractional skin resurfacing platform built around a 1927nm thulium wavelength, one of the most precise wavelengths used in modern aesthetic dermatology. The device delivers non-ablative, sub-ablative, and ablative pulses from a single platform, so your treatment can be calibrated to the depth, intensity, and recovery profile that fits your skin.

The 1927nm wavelength targets water in the epidermal and superficial dermal layers, creating microscopic treatment zones at depths between 100 and 200 micrometres. These controlled micro-injuries trigger the skin's natural healing response, stimulating collagen and elastin production while leaving surrounding tissue intact. Patients see improvements in tone, texture, pigmentation, and the appearance of fine lines, with significantly less downtime than traditional ablative laser resurfacing.

Because the 1927nm wavelength is absorbed by water rather than melanin, NouvaDerm is suitable across the full range of Fitzpatrick skin types, including darker tones that have historically faced higher risk of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation with other resurfacing technologies. Treatment depth, energy, and mode are selected at the start of each session, including signature settings like NOUVAGlo for revitalisation and dedicated modes for scalp and hair support.

A standard session takes 30 to 60 minutes depending on the treatment area and the depth selected. Most patients see mild redness or flaking that resolves within a few days, with more intensive sessions requiring up to a week of social downtime. Visible improvement typically begins within the first week, with continued refinement over the next three to six months as deeper collagen remodelling completes.

Every NouvaDerm session at BioPlus is performed by our medical team, supported by nearly 30 years of clinical laser experience in Vancouver. BioPlus has consistently been one of the first clinics in British Columbia to adopt new laser technologies since 1995, and the NouvaDerm launch continues that history.

Frequently asked questions

What does the NouvaDerm Thulium Laser treat?

NouvaDerm is used at BioPlus to treat pigmentation, melasma, sun damage, fine lines, uneven texture, enlarged pores, acne scarring, and stretch marks. It can also be used on the scalp to support hair and follicle health. During your consultation, our medical team will assess which mode and depth will deliver the best results for your specific concerns.

Is NouvaDerm safe for all skin tones?

Yes. The 1927nm thulium wavelength is absorbed by water in the skin rather than melanin, which means NouvaDerm can be used safely across the full range of Fitzpatrick skin types. This makes it a strong option for patients with medium and darker skin tones who may have been turned away from other laser resurfacing technologies due to risk of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation.

What does a NouvaDerm session feel like?

Most patients describe a warm, prickling sensation as the laser passes over the skin. For more intensive treatments, a topical numbing cream is applied beforehand to keep you comfortable throughout the session. The level of intensity is calibrated to your skin and your goals, and you can speak with your practitioner at any point during the treatment.

How long is a treatment session?

A standard NouvaDerm session takes 30 to 60 minutes depending on the area being treated and the depth selected. Lighter NouvaGlo treatments can run shorter. Your consultation will include a clear timeline for your specific plan.

What is the downtime after NouvaDerm?

Most patients experience mild redness or flaking that resolves within a few days, similar to a light sunburn. More intensive ablative or full resurfacing sessions can require up to a week of social downtime as the skin renews. Your practitioner will give you a clear post-treatment care plan and recommended timeline based on the intensity of your session.

When will I see results?

Many patients see a visible difference within the first week as the skin renews. Deeper improvements in tone, texture, and firmness continue to develop over the following three to six months as collagen remodelling completes. A series of three to five treatments typically delivers the strongest cumulative results.

How many sessions will I need?

Most NouvaDerm treatment plans range from two to five sessions, spaced four to six weeks apart. The exact number depends on the concern being treated, the depth selected for each session, and how your skin responds. Your medical team at BioPlus will build a personalised plan during your consultation.

Can NouvaDerm be combined with other treatments?

Yes. NouvaDerm pairs well with treatments such as microneedling, PRP, chemical peels, IPL photofacials, and injectables, depending on your goals. Our medical team will design a combined treatment plan during your consultation if a multi-modal approach is the right fit for your skin.
