Double chin treatment in Metro Vancouver

A double chin is common, and it is not always about weight. Where the fullness comes from is what matters, because it can be fat, loose skin, or a mix, and the right treatment depends on the cause.

A physician assesses your chin and neck, works out what your double chin is made of, and builds your plan before you decide anything.

Understanding the condition

What a double chin actually is

A double chin is a soft fullness under the jawline that forms when fat, loose skin, or both collect in the submental area, the space between the chin and the front of the neck.

It is a cosmetic concern rather than a disease, and it is common at every weight. Understanding what it is made of is where an honest plan starts, because the treatments that reduce fat and the treatments that firm skin are different, and one does little for the other. A genetically fuller fat pad can persist at a weight where the rest of the body has already responded, which is why a double chin can resist diet and exercise.

What it is made of

Three pictures hide inside one phrase

Fat under the chin

A pinchable pad of fat with firm, elastic skin over it. This is the picture that fat-directed treatments address, and the one with the strongest evidence behind it.

Loose skin

Skin that has lost its firmness under the chin and along the jawline, where the fullness is laxity rather than a fat pad. This routes to tightening, and a fat treatment would do little.

Muscle and structure

Fullness shaped mainly by the platysma muscle and its bands, or by the position of the jaw and hyoid bone. This can need a different route, sometimes beyond what an aesthetic device offers.

The BioPlus difference

Why the plan follows the cause, not the machine

Many clinics sell one treatment to everyone who asks about a double chin. It does not work that way. Because the fullness can be fat, loose skin, or structure, and because a fat treatment does little for loose skin while tightening does little for a fat pad, the plan has to follow what your chin is actually made of. That is why the assessment decides the tool, and why matching the treatment to the cause is the work that separates a considered plan from a treatment sold to everyone.

Assessment first, then the right tool

Find the cause

The physician looks at and pinches the area under your chin to judge how much is a pinchable fat pad, how much is loose skin, and how much is muscle and bone structure.

Treat the dominant cause

Fat-directed treatment for a fat pad under firm skin, tightening for loose skin, and a combined plan for the common chin that is a mix of both.

Be honest about limits

These treatments refine a defined fullness. They do not reduce weight or remove a large volume, and when the fullness is mainly structural, the physician points you to the route that fits.

When the honest answer is a different route

These treatments refine a defined fullness under the chin. They do not remove a large volume, and they do not reduce body weight. When the fullness is shaped mainly by the platysma muscle or by the jaw and hyoid structure, an aesthetic device does less, and we say so plainly, and point you toward the care that fits, which can include a surgical opinion. A treatment sold to everyone is the warning sign, and a plan matched to your chin is the opposite.

That is what physician led assessment is for.

How your visit works

From first look to a plan that fits

A double chin plan succeeds or fails at the assessment, not the device. So the slow work comes first.

1
Consultation

A physician looks at and pinches the area under your chin to work out how much is fat, how much is loose skin, and how much is muscle or structure.

2
Your plan

We match the treatment to the dominant cause, whether that is a fat-directed injection, skin tightening, an energy device that does both, or a different route, with the sessions and the cost set out.

3
Treatment

The plan runs as a course, and the change builds over weeks to months as the body clears the treated fat and the skin remodels new collagen.

4
Follow up

We photograph your progress against a standard baseline and plan maintenance, because tightening is topped up over time and the result holds with stable weight.

How care is built

Your plan points in one of three directions

No two double chin plans are the same, because the plan follows the cause. In practice it points one of three ways.

01
Reduce the fat

For a pad of fat under firm skin, fat-directed treatment leads. The strongest-evidenced choice is the prescription injection approved in Canada for fat under the chin, with an energy device as an alternative that also firms skin.

02
Firm the skin

For loose skin that has lost its firmness, tightening leads. Microfocused ultrasound lifts and firms the skin under the chin and jawline, where reducing fat would do little or leave the contour looser.

03
Both, for a mixed chin

Most chins are a mix of fat and laxity. The physician may pair a fat-directed treatment with tightening, or lead with an energy device that reduces fat and firms skin at the same time.

Treatments we may use

The tools we match to your chin

Ordered from the strongest-evidenced fat-directed option to the tightening and energy options and the compounded alternative. Which appear in your plan depends on what your chin is made of. Availability differs between our Burnaby and Richmond locations, so the physician confirms what is offered where.

Prescription submental fat-dissolving injection

Prescription injection, approved for submental fat

A prescription medication injected in a grid of small points into the fat pad under the chin, where it breaks down the treated fat cells so the body clears them over the following weeks. It is approved in Canada specifically for fat under the chin, and the evidence for that single use is strong. It suits mild to moderate fat under the chin in someone with good skin elasticity who can accept a visible swelling window.

Why this oneThe strongest-evidenced choice for a pad of fat under firm skin.

InMode MiniFX and BodyFX

Radiofrequency, vacuum and pulse energy

A non-invasive treatment that reduces a pocket of fat and firms the skin above it using radiofrequency heat, vacuum suction and short electrical pulses through one applicator. The smaller MiniFX applicator suits compact areas such as under the chin and along the jawline, so it fits the common mixed chin where a fat pad and some laxity sit together.

Why this oneReduces fat and firms skin at once, for a mixed chin.

Ultherapy PRIME

Microfocused ultrasound skin lift

A non-invasive treatment that lifts and tightens skin with focused ultrasound, placing tiny heat points at set depths, including the deep support layer, which remodel with new collagen over months. It is a skin lift, and it does not remove a fat pad, so it is chosen when the fullness is driven by loose skin rather than fat. It bypasses the surface of the skin, so it carries very little pigment risk across skin tones.

Why this oneLifts a laxity-driven chin. It does not reduce fat.

Injection lipolysis (compounded)

Compounded injection, not Health Canada approved

A compounded medication injected into small pockets of fat under the chin to break down fat cells, which the body clears over the following weeks. It is prepared for the individual patient rather than sold as a finished product. No injectable lipolysis product of this kind is approved by Health Canada, so it is used on a physician's prescription after assessment, and its unapproved status is stated plainly. Its evidence is weaker than the approved submental injection, and the physician will explain that approved alternative and surgical referral so you can compare before you decide.

Why this oneAn option some choose for small, diet-resistant pockets, with its unapproved status stated.

What to expect

Sessions, downtime and results

Timelines

Change is gradual. The injection's contour change from each session emerges over 4 to 6 weeks, energy treatments build over the weeks after the series, and microfocused ultrasound lifts over 2 to 3 months and continues to about 6 months. None is instant.

Sessions

The fat-dissolving injection is usually 2 to 4 sessions at least 4 weeks apart. The radiofrequency and vacuum treatment is about 6 to 8 weekly sessions. Microfocused ultrasound is usually a single session, repeated about every 12 to 18 months.

Downtime

The injection is the one to plan around, with noticeable swelling under the chin for about a week, sometimes 10 to 14 days, plus tenderness and bruising. The energy treatments have little to no downtime, and the ultrasound has no set downtime.

Aftercare

Normal skincare and sun protection, plus your physician's specific advice for your treatment. For the injection, the clinic explains how to manage the swelling window before you book.

What lasts, and what needs topping up

Here is the part worth saying plainly. The fat reduction from the injection or the energy treatment is long lasting once achieved, because cleared fat cells do not regrow, as long as your weight stays stable. The fat cells that remain can still enlarge if you gain weight, which softens the contour. Skin tightening is maintained with repeat sessions over time rather than being fixed forever. Results vary from person to person, and a chin whose fullness is mostly structural may change less than one that is mostly fat.

A double chin is not one problem, so it does not have one answer. The plan that works is the one matched to yours.

The BioPlus approach to a double chin

Questions patients ask

Double chin questions, answered

How do you get rid of a double chin?

It depends on what your double chin is made of, which is why a physician assesses it first. A double chin can be a pad of fat, loose skin that has lost firmness, the shape of the neck muscle and jaw underneath, or a mix. A fat-dominant chin with firm skin routes to a fat-directed treatment, such as a prescription injection approved for fat under the chin or a radiofrequency energy device. A chin whose fullness is mostly loose skin routes to skin tightening. A structural or muscle-driven chin may need a different route. Chin exercises and creams do not remove a submental fat pad. The honest first step is a consultation that works out the cause, then matches the treatment to it.

Does the fat-dissolving injection for a double chin work?

Yes, for the right chin, within honest limits. The prescription injection that is approved in Canada for fat under the chin has strong evidence for that single use. In the pivotal randomised, placebo-controlled trials, about 66 to 70 percent of treated patients reached at least a one-grade improvement in fullness under the chin, against roughly 19 to 22 percent with placebo, and improvement was maintained in most patients followed to three years. It works best for a pad of fat in someone with good skin elasticity, and it does little for fullness that is mostly loose skin or muscle. It involves a real swelling window. Your physician explains the medication, the plan and the cost at the consultation.

How many double chin injection sessions will I need?

Most people have two to four sessions, spaced at least four weeks apart, and the number depends on how much fat is under the chin and your goal. The pivotal trials allowed up to six sessions, and response improved with successive sessions, but typical clinical courses are shorter. Each session is a grid of small injections that takes about 15 to 30 minutes, and the contour change from each session builds over the following four to six weeks. Your physician sets your number at the consultation, with the cost, rather than selling a fixed package.

Is double chin removal permanent?

The fat reduction is long lasting, because the fat cells that are cleared by the injection or the energy treatment do not regrow, so the contour holds as long as your weight stays stable. It is not a result that survives any change, because the fat cells that remain can enlarge again if you gain weight, which softens the contour. Skin tightening is maintained with repeat sessions over time rather than being permanent. So a double chin result lasts with stable weight and healthy habits, and tightening is topped up as needed, rather than being fixed forever regardless of what follows.

What is the best treatment for a double chin?

There is no single best treatment, because the best one is the one that matches your cause. For a pad of fat under firm skin, the prescription injection approved for fat under the chin has the strongest evidence, and a radiofrequency energy device is an alternative that also firms skin. For loose skin, microfocused ultrasound lifts and tightens. For a mixed chin, a physician may combine a fat-directed treatment with tightening. For fullness that is mostly muscle or bone structure, the honest answer can be a different route, including a surgical opinion. The best plan comes from an assessment, not from picking a treatment before the cause is known.

Can you have a double chin without being overweight?

Yes. A double chin is common at every weight, because genetics set the size of the fat pad under the chin and the shape of the jaw and neck, and skin loosens with age regardless of weight. A slim person can inherit a fuller submental fat pad or a softer jawline, or can develop loose skin under the chin with age. This is also why a double chin can persist after weight loss, and why some people never lose it through diet at all. The cause, not the number on the scale, decides what will help.

Do chin exercises get rid of a double chin?

No, chin exercises do not remove a double chin. You cannot target fat loss to one area, because the body loses fat in a whole-body pattern set by your biology rather than from a spot you exercise. Exercises do not remove a fat pad under the chin, and they do not tighten skin that has lost its firmness. Good posture can make a double chin look less pronounced, and overall weight loss can reduce fat throughout the face, but a persistent submental fullness is addressed by treatment matched to its cause, not by chin exercises.

Does double chin treatment hurt, and how much downtime is there?

The energy treatments are comfortable with little downtime, and the injection is the one to plan around. The radiofrequency and vacuum treatment feels like heat, suction and brief pulses, with possible redness or mild bruising for a day or two. Microfocused ultrasound feels like brief deep warmth in lines, with no set downtime. The fat-dissolving injection is done after ice or numbing, and it is followed by noticeable swelling under the chin for about a week, sometimes 10 to 14 days, along with tenderness, bruising and temporary numbness. The swelling is part of how it works. We explain the sensation and the recovery for your specific plan before you book.

Is double chin treatment safe for darker and Asian skin tones?

Yes. The injection and energy treatments used here do not target pigment, so skin tone does not change how they work, and they are supported across the full range of Fitzpatrick skin types. This is different from light-based treatments, which target pigment and carry more risk in deeper skin. The points that call for care are the needle points of the injection and any vacuum suction, where conservative settings and unhurried technique keep the small risk of temporary pigmentation low, and a keloid history is worth raising first. BioPlus has treated skin across every tone since 1996.

How much does double chin treatment cost in Vancouver?

Cost depends on the treatment, how much fullness there is, and the number of sessions your plan needs, so it is quoted for you after assessment. A short course of the injection is priced differently from a series of energy sessions or a combined plan. Your complimentary consultation includes an honest price for the plan the physician recommends, and the physician will tell you if a treatment is not the right fit before you spend anything.
