How it works

Sylfirm X is a dual-wave radiofrequency microneedling platform manufactured by Viol, a South Korean aesthetic technology company specialising in advanced RF treatment systems. Sylfirm X is the first FDA-cleared device of its kind, combining two distinct radiofrequency delivery modes in a single platform: Pulsed Wave (PW) for vascular and pigmentation work, and Continuous Wave (CW) for traditional skin tightening and remodelling.

The Pulsed Wave mode is what sets Sylfirm X apart from other RF microneedling devices. PW delivers selective non-thermal radiofrequency energy that specifically targets abnormal blood vessels and the vascular component of conditions like melasma and rosacea, without transferring significant heat to surrounding tissue. This is the key to treating conditions that get worse with traditional heat-based lasers. Melasma in particular is notoriously difficult to treat because thermal injury can trigger the very pigment-producing cells that cause it. Sylfirm X bypasses this risk entirely.

The Continuous Wave mode delivers traditional RF microneedling, where insulated microneedles penetrate the skin and deliver controlled radiofrequency energy at depth. This stimulates dermal collagen production and produces tightening, remodelling, and improvement in skin texture and laxity. Together, the two modes allow our medical team to address pigmentation, vascular concerns, and skin quality in a coordinated treatment plan.

Sylfirm X is one of the safest treatment options available for medium and darker skin tones. The RF mechanism bypasses surface melanin entirely, which means significantly lower risk of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation compared to laser-based treatments. Patients with skin types IV through VI who have historically been turned away from resurfacing treatments often find Sylfirm X the right fit.

A standard Sylfirm X session takes 60 to 90 minutes including topical numbing and treatment time. Downtime is minimal, typically 1 to 2 days of mild redness similar to a mild sunburn, with small dot marks fading within a few days. Most patients book a series of 3 to 5 sessions spaced four to six weeks apart, with maintenance every six to twelve months. Every Sylfirm X session at BioPlus is performed by our certified, fully-trained medical team at both Burnaby and Richmond.

Frequently asked questions

What does Sylfirm X treat?

Sylfirm X is used at BioPlus to treat melasma, rosacea-related redness, sensitive and reactive skin, vascular concerns including diffuse redness and broken capillaries, pigmentation, fine lines, acne scarring, and skin laxity. It is particularly well known for treating conditions that have not responded to other lasers or topical treatments.

What makes Sylfirm X unique?

Sylfirm X is the first FDA-cleared dual-wave radiofrequency microneedling device, combining Pulsed Wave (PW) and Continuous Wave (CW) radiofrequency delivery in a single platform. The Pulsed Wave mode targets vascular concerns and pigmentation by selectively treating abnormal blood vessels without affecting surrounding tissue. The Continuous Wave mode delivers traditional RF microneedling for skin tightening and remodelling. This dual capability is why Sylfirm X is widely considered the gold standard for melasma and rosacea treatment.

Is Sylfirm X safe for all skin tones?

Yes. Sylfirm X is one of the safest treatment options available for medium and darker skin tones. The radiofrequency mechanism bypasses surface melanin entirely, which means there is significantly lower risk of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation compared to laser-based pigmentation treatments. This makes Sylfirm X especially valuable for patients with skin types IV through VI who have historically been excluded from many resurfacing options.

Why is Sylfirm X considered the gold standard for melasma?

Melasma is notoriously difficult to treat because heat-based lasers can actually worsen pigmentation by triggering inflammation. Sylfirm X uses non-thermal Pulsed Wave radiofrequency that targets the abnormal vascular component of melasma without heating surrounding tissue. By addressing the underlying vascular network that contributes to melasma activity, Sylfirm X achieves results other treatments cannot, particularly in challenging cases that have resisted topicals and other lasers.

What does a Sylfirm X session feel like?

Topical numbing cream is applied to the treatment area before the session begins, which significantly improves comfort. During treatment, patients describe a sensation of light pressure followed by warmth as the microneedles deliver radiofrequency energy. Most patients tolerate the treatment well. Your practitioner will adjust intensity based on your skin type, concern, and comfort level.

How long is a Sylfirm X session?

A full-face Sylfirm X session typically takes 60 to 90 minutes including numbing time, treatment, and post-treatment care. Smaller focused areas such as around the eyes or specific patches of melasma may take less time.

Is there downtime after Sylfirm X?

Downtime is minimal. Most patients experience mild redness and slight swelling for 24 to 48 hours, similar to a mild sunburn. Small dot-like marks from the microneedles fade within a few days. Makeup can typically be applied 24 hours after treatment. Most patients return to normal activities the next day.

How many sessions will I need?

Most patients need a series of 3 to 5 sessions spaced four to six weeks apart for meaningful improvement, followed by maintenance treatments every six to twelve months. Melasma and stubborn pigmentation often benefit from a longer series and ongoing maintenance. Your medical team will build a personalised plan during your consultation.

Is Sylfirm X better than laser for melasma?

For many patients, yes. Traditional heat-based lasers can worsen melasma by triggering pigment-producing cells. Sylfirm X uses non-thermal radiofrequency that targets the vascular component of melasma without inflammatory triggering. For patients who have tried lasers and topicals without success, Sylfirm X is often the breakthrough option. During your consultation, our medical team will assess your specific melasma pattern and recommend the right protocol.
