Body fat and contouring in Metro Vancouver

Some fat holds on. You can be near your goal weight, eating well and training, and still carry a pocket on the abdomen, the flanks, the arms or under the chin that will not shift, because where your body keeps fat is set largely by your genes and hormones rather than by effort.

Physician led. Burnaby and Richmond. Every skin tone since 1996.

Understanding the condition

What stubborn body fat actually is

Stubborn body fat is subcutaneous fat, the layer just under the skin, that collects in genetically set pockets and resists diet and exercise even when the rest of the body has responded.

Body contouring treats the appearance of a specific pocket. It does not treat body weight, and understanding that difference is where an honest plan starts. Where your body lays fat down, and the order it gives it back, is set by hormones and inherited factors rather than by which muscles you exercise, which is why a targeted workout cannot empty one pocket while the rest of you has already changed.

Three goals hide inside body fat

People describe all of this as body fat, but three separate problems hide inside that phrase, and each has its own tools.

Fat reduction

Reducing the size and number of fat cells in a defined, pinchable pocket. This is the work of the fat-reduction devices and the fat-dissolving injections.

Muscle toning

Building the muscle underneath so an area looks firmer and more defined. Losing fat does not build muscle, so a flat, toned abdomen needs both.

Skin tightening

Firming loose or crepey skin over the area. Fat under lax skin and lax skin itself are different problems, and reducing fat under loose skin can leave it looser.

The BioPlus difference

Why skin tone is not a barrier here

Many light-based body and hair treatments target pigment, which raises the risk of burns and pigment change in darker skin. The devices on this page work differently. Radiofrequency heats tissue by passing a current through it, and focused electromagnetic energy stimulates muscle with a magnetic field, and neither depends on melanin, so skin tone does not change how the energy is absorbed. People who were turned away from laser body treatments elsewhere because of their skin tone usually have no tone-related barrier to these. Treating skin across every tone is what we have done since 1996.

Colour independent energy

Radiofrequency and electromagnetic energy do not target melanin, so the same physics works across Fitzpatrick I to VI, and reviews of these devices support the full range of skin types.

The real exclusions

What rules a device out here is a metal or electronic implant, a hernia at the site, or pregnancy, not the colour of your skin.

Care where it counts

For vacuum suction and any needle step, conservative settings and unhurried technique keep the small risk of temporary pigmentation low in deeper tones, and we ask about keloid history first.

Why we call this contouring, not weight loss

This is the line many clinics blur, and we will not. These treatments reduce a defined pocket of fat, build muscle, or firm skin in one area. They do not lower your body weight, and they are not a route to weight loss. They suit people already near a stable, healthy weight who have a pocket that diet and exercise have not shifted. If your goal is to lose a meaningful amount of weight, that comes first, through diet, activity and medical support, and contouring comes later, once the weight is stable. A physician will tell you which of these you need, or that no device fits your goal at all.

An honest no is part of the service.

How your visit works

From first assessment to real change

Body contouring goes wrong when a device is sold before the goal is understood. So we do the slow work first.

1
Consultation

A physician checks that your weight is stable, pinches the area to read how much is fat, loose skin or muscle, and asks about your skin tone and health.

2
Your plan

We work out which of the three goals leads, whether the area suits a device at all, and match the tool to the goal rather than to one machine.

3
Treatment

Your series runs over several sessions, with energy devices, muscle work or injections chosen for your area, always at conservative settings on deeper skin tones.

4
Follow up

We photograph a standard baseline and review your progress as the change builds over the weeks and months that follow.

How care is built

Your plan follows three rules

No two body plans are the same, because the plan follows your goal, what the pocket is actually made of, and whether a device can meet the goal at all.

01
Match the tool to the goal

Fat reduction, muscle tone and skin tightening need different devices. The plan starts by naming which goal leads, because a device that is excellent for one does little for another.

02
Be honest when no device fits

Non-surgical contouring refines a pocket. It does not debulk a large volume or lower your weight, so when a goal needs stable weight first or a surgical opinion, a physician says so rather than book a series that cannot meet it.

03
Plan for a gradual series

Every device here works over a series, with the change building for weeks to months afterward as the body clears the treated fat and the muscle or collagen responds. Nothing here is instant, and the number of sessions is set to your area and goal.

Treatments we may use

The tools we reach for on body contour

Grouped by what they do. Which appear in your plan depends on your goal, your area and whether a device fits at all. Availability differs between Burnaby and Richmond, so the physician confirms what is offered where.

EMsculpt NEO

Electromagnetic muscle plus radiofrequency

Builds muscle and reduces fat in one session through a single applicator, pairing focused electromagnetic contractions no workout can match with synchronised radiofrequency that warms and clears the fat above. A multicentre MRI study of the abdomen reported about a 31 percent reduction in subcutaneous fat thickness and about a 26 percent increase in muscle thickness at three months, and individual results vary.

Why this oneThe best-quantified option here, and the only one that also builds muscle.

InMode MiniFX and BodyFX

Radiofrequency and vacuum contouring

Reduces a pocket of localised fat and firms the skin above it, using radiofrequency heat, vacuum suction and short electrical pulses that break down fat cell membranes so the treated cells clear over the following weeks. It refines a contour by centimetres in someone near a stable weight, it does not remove fat the way surgery does.

Why this oneFor a pinchable pocket with mild laxity, firming skin as it reduces fat.

EndyMed PRO

Multisource radiofrequency

A multi-handpiece radiofrequency platform that steers heat into the deeper skin and the tissue beneath it, firming skin and refining a contour with low surface temperature and no downtime. On the body it is chosen mainly for contour refinement and skin quality rather than fat removal, producing modest change measured in centimetres over a series.

Why this oneFor comfortable, no-downtime firming when skin quality matters as much as shape.

Prescription submental fat-dissolving injection

For fat under the chin only

A prescription medication injected in a grid of points into the fat under the chin, where it breaks down the treated fat cells so the body clears them over the following weeks. It is licensed and evidenced for the submental area only, not for body fat, and randomised placebo-controlled trials support its use for fullness under the chin.

Why this oneThe chin-specific route for a fat-dominant chin with good skin elasticity, covered in full on the double chin page.

Injection lipolysis

Compounded, not Health Canada approved

A compounded medication injected into small pockets of subcutaneous fat to break down fat cells, which the body clears over the following weeks. It is prepared for the individual patient rather than sold as a finished product: no injectable lipolysis product of this kind is approved by Health Canada, and any compounded preparation is used on a physician's prescription after assessment. The evidence base is weaker than for the approved submental injection, resting on case series and small studies with formulas that vary between providers.

Why this oneAn option some patients choose for small, diet-resistant pockets, with modest and variable change. A physician explains the evidence and the approved alternatives first.

What to expect

Sessions, downtime and results

Sessions

Every treatment here is a series. EMsculpt NEO is usually 4 sessions over 2 to 3 weeks per area, the radiofrequency devices about 6 to 8 sessions, and the injections 2 to 4 sessions at least 4 weeks apart.

Downtime

The energy treatments have little to no downtime, just warmth, redness or occasional bruising for a day or two. The injections bring noticeable swelling, most marked under the chin, where it can last about a week and sometimes 10 to 14 days.

Timelines

Nothing here is instant. Fat-reduction results from the energy devices are commonly assessed 8 to 12 weeks after a series, muscle change from EMsculpt NEO at 1 to 3 months, and injection results emerge over 4 to 6 weeks per session.

Aftercare

Hydrate, keep moving, and return to normal activity. After the injections, follow the physician's advice and expect the swelling to settle over the days that follow. Sunscreen over treated skin as usual.

The honest expectation, said plainly

These treatments refine a contour, they do not lower your weight, and the result lasts while your weight stays stable. The treated fat cells are cleared and do not regrow, but the cells that remain can enlarge again with weight gain, and muscle gains fade without maintenance. So a realistic plan means reaching a stable weight first, keeping healthy habits, and returning for occasional maintenance, rather than expecting one course to hold regardless of what follows.

Stubborn fat is not a failure of effort. It is biology, and our job is to be honest about what a device can and cannot change.

The BioPlus approach to body contouring

Questions patients ask

Body contouring FAQs

What is body contouring, and is it the same as weight loss?

Body contouring is a group of non-surgical treatments that reduce a defined pocket of stubborn fat, build muscle, or firm skin in one treated area of the body. It is not weight loss and not a substitute for it. The devices act on the fat, muscle or skin in the area they treat, so the shape of a specific area is the point, not the number on the scale. These treatments are for people already near a stable, healthy weight who have a pocket that diet and exercise have not shifted. If your goal is to lose a meaningful amount of weight, that comes first, through diet, activity and medical support, and contouring comes later once the weight is stable.

Does non-surgical fat reduction actually work?

Yes, for the right person and area, within honest limits. The energy devices reduce the subcutaneous fat layer in a treated pocket by a modest, measured amount over a series of sessions. The best-quantified device here reduced abdominal subcutaneous fat by an average of about 31 percent and increased muscle thickness by about 26 percent at three months in a multicentre MRI study. Those are real, measurable changes to one pocket, not to body weight. They work best in people near a stable weight with a specific pinchable area, and they do not debulk large volumes of fat the way surgery does. Results vary from person to person.

Does EMsculpt NEO work, and what does it do?

EMsculpt NEO builds muscle and reduces fat in the same session by combining focused electromagnetic muscle stimulation with radiofrequency heating. In a multicentre MRI study of the abdomen it produced about a 31 percent reduction in subcutaneous fat thickness and about a 26 percent increase in muscle thickness at three months, and a separate analysis reported a reduction in visceral fat as well. It suits people near a stable weight who want tone and definition on the abdomen, buttocks, arms, thighs or calves. It is a contouring and muscle treatment, not a weight-loss treatment, and it is not suitable for anyone with a pacemaker, defibrillator or other electronic or metal implant near the area, or during pregnancy.

How many EMsculpt NEO sessions do you need?

The standard course is 4 sessions of 30 minutes per body area, spaced about 5 to 10 days apart, so a course usually runs across 2 to 3 weeks. Results are measured 1 to 3 months after the last session, as the muscle builds and the treated fat clears, and many people have occasional maintenance sessions to hold the result. Your physician confirms the number for your area and goal at the consultation. More sessions than the standard four are not automatically better, and the plan is set to what your body needs rather than to a fixed package.

Is body contouring permanent?

The fat reduction is long lasting because the treated fat cells are cleared and do not regrow, so the contour change holds as long as your weight stays stable. It is not a fix that survives any lifestyle, because the fat cells that remain in the area can enlarge again if you gain weight, which softens the result. Muscle gains from EMsculpt NEO behave like any training and fade without maintenance. So results last with stable weight and healthy habits, and are maintained with occasional sessions, rather than being permanent regardless of what follows.

Does fat freezing work, and do you offer CoolSculpting?

BioPlus does not offer CoolSculpting or fat freezing. Fat freezing, or cryolipolysis, is a non-surgical method that cools a localised fat bulge to reduce it, and like the treatments here it is meant for stubborn localised fat in people near their goal weight, not for weight loss. BioPlus contours the body with EMsculpt NEO, which reduces fat and builds muscle in one session, and with radiofrequency devices that reduce a fat pocket and firm the skin. At your complimentary consultation the physician explains which of these suits your area and goal, and will compare the options with you honestly.

Which treatment gets rid of a stubborn belly or love handles?

It depends on what the pocket is made of, which is why the physician pinches and assesses it first. A pinchable pocket of fat with firm skin in someone near a stable weight may suit EMsculpt NEO, which reduces the fat and builds the muscle underneath, or a radiofrequency and vacuum contouring series. A softer area with loose skin may need radiofrequency tightening alongside or before fat reduction, because reducing fat under loose skin can leave the skin looser. A larger volume of fat, or a goal of weight loss, will disappoint a device, and the honest plan there is stable weight first or a surgical opinion. The consultation sets yours.

Is body contouring safe for darker and Asian skin tones?

Yes. The radiofrequency and electromagnetic devices used here do not target pigment, so skin tone does not change how the energy is absorbed, and they are supported across the full range of Fitzpatrick skin types. This is different from light-based body and hair treatments, which target pigment and carry more risk in deeper skin. The points that call for care are the vacuum suction and any needle-based step, where conservative settings and unhurried technique keep the small risk of temporary pigmentation low, and a keloid history is worth raising first. BioPlus has treated skin across every tone since 1996.

Does it hurt, and how much downtime is there?

The energy treatments are comfortable and low-downtime. EMsculpt NEO feels like strong involuntary muscle contractions with deep warmth, and you may feel workout-style soreness for a day or two. The radiofrequency and vacuum contouring feels like heat, suction and brief pulses, with possible redness or mild bruising for a day or two. The injections are the exception: they are done after ice or numbing and are followed by noticeable swelling, tenderness and bruising, most marked under the chin where swelling can last about a week and sometimes 10 to 14 days. We explain the sensation and the recovery for your specific plan before you book.

How much does body contouring cost in Vancouver?

Cost depends on the treatment, the size of the area, and the number of sessions your plan needs, so it is quoted for you after assessment. A single small area over a short course is priced very differently from several areas or a full series. Your complimentary consultation includes an honest price for the plan the physician recommends, and the physician will tell you if a device is not the right fit before you spend anything. Complimentary consultation

Start with an honest assessment

Stubborn fat is not a measure of effort, and a pocket that resists diet and exercise is not a personal failing. A physician assesses whether your goal is fat reduction, muscle tone, firmer skin, or a combination, works out whether the area suits a device at all, and builds a plan around realistic change in a body already near its goal weight. These are contouring treatments, not weight-loss treatments, and we say so plainly. We have treated skin across every tone since 1996.
